RAIL travellers face unrestricted fare increases after privatisation, the statutory passengers' watchdog said yesterday.

The Central Rail Users 'Consultative Committee is squaring up to challenge ministers as it emerged that British Rail would not this month, for the first time, announce proposed national fare rises for next year.

Instead, with the exception of certain capped fares, the 25 train operating companies into which BR is now split are free to fix and announce their own increases.
